Thruxton Women's Institute
The first meeting of Thruxton WI was in February 1920. Currently we have fifteen members. We usually meet on the third Wednesday in the month at 7.30pm in the Machin Room at Thruxton War Memorial Hall. We are a very friendly group and visitors are assured of a warm welcome.
As well as our monthly meetings when we have interesting speakers and demonstrations, we arrange trips to the theatre, walks on summer evenings, which often end up with a pub meal and other activities suggested by members. We have a summer outing every June, a tea party in August and a Christmas meal in December. We take part in skittles tournaments and quizzes with other WIs in the area and enjoy events organised by the Hampshire Federation of WIs.
We organise a ‘drop in’ tea afternoon in the Hall on alternate Wednesdays to coincide with the visits of the mobile library van. We also provide the teas for the village fete every June. We have set up a‘Singing for Fun group’ which is open to everyone who likes to sing; no experience in singing or reading music needed, neither is membership of the WI. It meets during term times from 2-3pm on alternate Thursday afternoons in the Machin Room. Last year we successfully applied to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation’s Grassroots scheme for a grant towards the cost of songbooks for the singing group and for printing costs for a fundraising cook book to be produced this year.
During last year we were very busy fundraising for our 90th anniversary celebrations this year. As well as the cookbook already mentioned, we have taken part in boot fairs and table top sales, organised a very successful jumble sale, as well as having bring and buy tables at our meetings, with the proceeds being saved for our celebrations. We plan to celebrate with an anniversary tea party in February and then a day in London in June
