War Memorial Hall

HallThruxton War Memorial Hall,
The Village Street,
Thruxton,
HAMPSHIRE

HallThruxton War Memorial Hall is situated in the centre of the beautiful Hampshire Village of Thruxton.  Andover is 5 miles to the East along the A303. Thruxton Memorial Hall was built in 1817 as a Methodist Chapel. A Victorian school room was added to the back of the Chapel in 1870. It was bought for the village in 1945 by Alfred Machin to be used as a Village Hall. It was dedicated in 1945 by the Bishop of Southampton to the memory of the men of Thruxton village and its vicinity who gave their lives in the two world wars 1914 – 1918 and 1939 - 1945.  It has been in constant use since then as the centre of various activities for the village.

The building slowly began to deteriorate, and in 2002 it was decided that it would be worth trying for a grant from the Heritage Lottery fund to restore the hall, and add a small meeting room in the same style as the Victorian extension. After a very lengthy process of applications and much fund raising and generous grants from Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council and the Parish Council, the committee and project group were successful in getting a grant.  Building started in 2004 and the refurbished Hall was handed over in 2005. The Hall is now a beautifully restored late Georgian building, with a smaller meeting room, a demountable stage and kitchen and modern toilet facilities including baby changing and disabled toilet. It is now the centre of a very many Village activities, and is in great demand for special parties and family celebrations. The hall is run by a hard working committee of Trustees:

The Hall in its reconditioned state is a wonderful asset to the village.  To keep it in this condition and to increase the use of the hall to cover expenses is the prime consideration for the Trustees.  The present team is very enthusiastic, and willing to take on the challenge for another year, but does need new members.
