Village Association
Thruxton Village Association has been running the Village Fete and other events in the Village for over thirty years. The 2011 Fete was probably the wettest on record but we all managed to enjoy ourselves and make a profit of about £1600 which as always was distributed amongst village organisations and clubs. Every one who attends enjoys the simple fun attractions. Each year more raffle tickets are sold than the previous year and most of the prizes go to local residents. We are extremely grateful to villagers, neighbours and their friends who support us in this ever popular venture. and especially to that increasing number of villagers who join in so cheerfully with the setting up, the running and the clearing up. It all makes for a vibrant community and true village spirit. The attractions of the skittle alley, the popcorn machine and the candy floss machine remain - and all these can be hired – contact the Chairman. AS 2012 is a special year with the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen and the Olympics we are planning a day of events, starting with a village service on Saturday 2nd June and then a Village Lunch on the Green on the day of the Fete, Sunday 3rd of June. The vening will see a Barn Dance and a Hog Roast in the Hall. The Village Association also arranges at least one, sometimes two, Progressive Dinner Parties. These are great fun; we start at one home for the first course, and then move to a different home to meet new people, and then move again to a third home for a pudding course. These evenings are thoroughly enjoyable, make money for the village and always end up in the War Memorial Hall for coffee and liqueurs. The next Progressive Dinner Party is on Saturday 31st of March. The purpose of these hugely enjoyable gatherings is to raise money for village organisations. Over the years well over £20,000 has been raised and distributed. In previous years the Committee decided to donate approximately £1800 each year to village organisations. Organisations that have benefited are:
- The Parochial Church Council – for tree work, a shed, church path lighting and tree works.
- Kimpton Church of England Primary School – TV camera for nesting boxes and a special rug
- Thruxton Gardening Club – plants and seeds for around the village and help with speaker's fees
- Thruxton Allotments Association – hedge and tree clearing
- Thruxton Table Tennis Club – new table tennis tables
- Thruxton War Memorial Hall – curtains and crockery, contributions towards audio visual
- The Play Group – childrens’ play equipment
- The Three Villages Sports Trust – sports equipment, rabbit proof fencing for the pitch
- The Mandy Garden – wild flower seeds
- The Mums and Toddlers Group - help with Hall hire charges
- The Line Dancing Club - contribution towards costs
Last year, 2011, saw the wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton on the 29th of April. The village celebrated that happy occasion with special parties, an afternoon tea party with a magician and special souvenir mugs given free to all village children under 16, and an evening of barbecue, song and dancing. It is planned to present Diamond Jubilee mugs to all villagers under 16 again this year, and to have some more on sale for grandparents, or any other adults who would like a genuine Thruxton mug.
The third edition (2009) of the Thruxton Village Appraisal has been published and distributed. This is a fascinasting social survey of village life, attitudes and aspirations. It also contains a concise history of the village. Some copies are still available from the Chairman in exchange for a donation towards charity.
Remember, everybody who lives in the village is automatically a member of the Village Association. When you move into the village you will receive a welcome letter and an information pack of useful contacts and information. All we ask in return is that you support our events and enjoy what you come along to.
